AMD Acquires World Labs for $8.2 Billion in All-Stock Deal
AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The announcement on September 28, 2026, follows a year of rapid progress for the startup behind Marble, the first commercial world model. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026 pending regulatory approvals.
World Labs will remain a separate research organization during the transition, with its team continuing to develop frontier models. AMD highlighted the acquisition as a way to better understand evolving AI workloads and incorporate that insight into future hardware and software roadmaps.
World Models Generate Usable 3D Environments
World models create navigable 3D scenes that robots, designers, and other software can interact with in real time. Marble, released in November 2025, turns text prompts or a handful of photos into editable 3D environments that users can export for use in downstream tools.
Robotics Testing Becomes Faster and More Reproducible
In one documented workflow, Lightwheel used Marble to build robot test environments from a single 360-degree photo or a few casual images. The resulting scene was converted to the USD format with Nvidia Omniverse NuRec and loaded into Isaac Sim, where Lightwheel added its own assets and ran thousands of test iterations.
The approach bypassed the need for expensive dense scanning of real-world sites and cut environment creation time from weeks to minutes according to the case study. This matters because testing, not training, has become the primary bottleneck in scaling robotics development.
Design Software Integration Gains Momentum
Autodesk invested $200 million in World Labs’ $1 billion funding round in February 2026 and has explored joint work on world models. The companies have not yet finalized the scope of integration, but early conversations include using Marble to sketch layouts that can be refined inside Autodesk tools.
“You could anticipate us consuming their models or them consuming our models in different settings,” Autodesk chief scientist Daron Green said at the time. Data sharing was not part of any agreement.
Fei-Fei Li Joins AMD as Chief Scientist
World Labs co-founder and CEO Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist. Her research team will keep focusing on model development while AMD gains direct access to the technology.
Li wrote on social media that the team remains “unwavering in our mission, and even more excited to continue building a world leading frontier research organization that is durable for the decades ahead.”
The acquisition complicates some enterprise workflows because Marble environments currently route through Nvidia’s simulation stack. AMD has not indicated whether export options or compatibility will change after closing.
